Chiasso-Brogeda border crossing: clearing a vehicle from Italy in Ticino
By Anna Katharina Finsler, Managing Director, Finsler Customs GmbH · Last updated:
In Chiasso we clear vehicles from Italy in the Basic package for CHF 350 incl. VAT. Vehicle imports are handled by the Chiasso-Strada office, which clears Monday to Friday 07:30–18:30 and Saturday 07:30–14:00. These are the longest hours of all 17 crossings where we clear vehicles.
Where is the Chiasso-Brogeda border crossing?
Chiasso is at the southern tip of Ticino. At the Brogeda motorway crossing the A2 becomes the Italian A9 towards Como and Milan; opposite lies Ponte Chiasso, part of Como.
Important for imports: according to the FOCBS directory, the «Brogeda Autostrada» office (CH004182) does not accept vehicle imports. The responsible office is «Chiasso-Strada» (CH004181) at Via Maestri Comacini 12, about half a kilometre away.
Who is Chiasso-Brogeda a good fit for?
Chiasso suits vehicles from Lombardy, from Milan, Como, Monza or Bergamo, and anyone arriving from the south on the A9. On the Swiss side it is the crossing for the Mendrisiotto, Lugano and the rest of Ticino.
Long hours, Saturdays included
Until 18:30 on weekdays and until 14:00 on Saturdays: Chiasso-Strada is open for vehicle imports longer than any other office on our list, Thayngen included. If you can only set off in the afternoon on a working day, this is your best chance.
How customs clearance works with Finsler Customs
- Enter the order online. In the import calculator you choose the Basic package and the Chiasso-Brogeda crossing. Then you upload the purchase contract, registration certificate and COC and set the day you will cross the border.
- Declaration. We file the electronic import declaration for the vehicle. On site, a customs partner we work with handles the clearance for us.
- Collect the papers. On the agreed day you cross at Chiasso-Brogeda and collect the assessment notice and the inspection report 13.20 A at the counter in Chiasso.
- Charges. The 4 % automobile tax and 8.1 % import VAT go through our customs account and are passed on without mark-up; import duty has been CHF 0 since 1 January 2024. Our flat fee: CHF 350 incl. VAT, the same at every crossing.
Export formalities in the country of origin are not part of the Basic package: the export declaration is made there by the seller or a customs agent. If you want us to handle transport and export as well, choose Comfort or Premium. With the inspection report 13.20 A you then book the vehicle inspection (MFK) and registration in your canton.
