Bargen–Neuhaus border crossing: clearing a vehicle in the north of the canton of Schaffhausen
By Anna Katharina Finsler, Managing Director, Finsler Customs GmbH · Last updated:
In Bargen we clear your vehicle in the Basic package for CHF 350 incl. VAT. The customs office at Hoftalstrasse 23 clears vehicles Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 17:30, not on Saturdays. Bargen is about 11 kilometres as the crow flies from Thayngen; you enter the order online and collect the papers at the counter.
Where is the Bargen–Neuhaus border crossing?
Bargen is Switzerland's northernmost municipality, in the canton of Schaffhausen, above Merishausen. Across the border, on the German side, lies Neuhaus with the German customs office. From Schaffhausen the road climbs through the Durach valley to the border.
The Swiss customs office is at Hoftalstrasse 23. Together with Thayngen, Bargen is one of the two crossings in the canton of Schaffhausen on our list; they are about 11 kilometres apart as the crow flies.
Who is Bargen–Neuhaus a good fit for?
Bargen suits you if the vehicle is north of Schaffhausen, in the Schwarzwald-Baar district, on the Baar plateau or in the upper Danube valley, and you want to avoid the detour via Singen. On the Swiss side you are in Schaffhausen within minutes, and from there on the A4 towards Winterthur and Zurich.
Small, and closed on Saturdays
Bargen is a small crossing; in 2015 the closure of the customs office was under discussion, and in 2016 the canton of Schaffhausen announced that it would stay. For vehicle imports it is open on weekdays only. If you want to clear on a Saturday, use Thayngen (08:00–12:00).
How customs clearance works with Finsler Customs
- Enter the order online. In the import calculator you choose the Basic package and the Bargen–Neuhaus crossing. Then you upload the purchase contract, registration certificate and COC and set the day you will cross the border.
- Declaration. We file the electronic import declaration for the vehicle. On site, a customs partner we work with handles the clearance for us.
- Collect the papers. On the agreed day you cross at Bargen–Neuhaus and collect the assessment notice and the inspection report 13.20 A at the counter in Bargen.
- Charges. The 4 % automobile tax and 8.1 % import VAT go through our customs account and are passed on without mark-up; import duty has been CHF 0 since 1 January 2024. Our flat fee: CHF 350 incl. VAT, the same at every crossing.
Export formalities in the country of origin are not part of the Basic package: the export declaration is made there by the seller or a customs agent. If you want us to handle transport and export as well, choose Comfort or Premium. With the inspection report 13.20 A you then book the vehicle inspection (MFK) and registration in your canton.
